“Christmas in Solidarity and Hope: Message from the Provincial”
Advent this year (2025) opened amidst cries of the entire nation affected by cyclone, floods and landslides. “Maranatha”- Come Lord! is the very invocation of Sri Lanka and for Sri Lanka. Hundreds of Good Samaritans rose to the occasion to ease the human tragedy voluntarily. As usual the Catholic Church, and for our part as Oblates, we were one of the first in the field. Needs can be provided but the loss of the victims remains irreversible. May they rest in peace! And the near and dear ones be consoled.
Our festivities; Immaculate Conception and Christmas become more and more meaningful to celebrate with their basic significance. Immaculate Conception is a miraculous intervention of the Divine into the
Salvation History -bringing the Calvaric redemptive grace to a particular individual as an advanced
happening. Mary the highly favoured was given an extra-ordinary allowance of grace to keep her intact
from the stain of Original Sin. Nothing is impossible to God. He surpasses the natural laws; hence, he can
command the seas and the oceans!
Coincidentally the feast of Christmas comes following the Immaculate Conception in the liturgical
calendar. It is a reinforcement of God’s superiority over the natural physical laws -a miraculous birth. All
these repeatedly affirm God’s omnipotence. What is hopeful, these days, is the human empathy and
solidarity from every corner towards Sri Lanka. The doors of the inns are kept wide open to the asylum
seekers. The ravaged manger is visited by ‘shepherds’ with supplies. Mourning noise along the streets of
‘Rama’ is consoled, ‘magi’ -not only from the East but from every direction find way to meet the needy
carrying aids in caravans. The nativity is represented! Let there be pitched the tent of the Eternal Word
among us. Let there be fulfilment of the angelic song for us: On high glory to God and on earth peace to
men!
Blessed festivities!
