In the quiet coastal district of Mannar, a loud cry for justice is rising. Since August 2025,local residents joined by youth and faith leaders-have taken to the streets to protest the expansion of the Thambapavani Wind Farm and the launch of a large-scale mineral sand mining.
For the people of Mannar, this is not just about development-it’s about survival. Fisherfolk say disrupted water flows are destroying, their catches, while farmers fear poisoned groundwater from ilmenite mining.“ Our land and sea feed us. If they are gone, so are we,” one protester declared.
The community’s demands are clear: stop mining, ensure transparent Environmental
g, e Impact Assessments, grant legal protection to fragile ecosystems, compensate affected families, and hold violators accountable. Their struggle highlights a global dilemma: how do we pursue progress without sacrificing the very environment and livelihoods that sustain us?
For Mannar, the answer is urgent-their future is truly at stake.
